Good Food National Edition 2018
Contemporary architect-designed chateau with Old World values.
Don't be deceived. The monolithic rammed-earth wall contouring the Red Hill ridgeline opens to sweeping views of vine-lined hills, valleys and distant waters of Western Port uniting cellar door, terrace and restaurant. Inside concrete, limestone, timber and glass keep the fitout clean and modern. Why spoil that view? Head for the black mesh designer chairs and wide spaced tables to enjoy Chef Stuart Deller's cleverly conceived, beautifully balanced combinations of flavour and texture. Two and three- course menus rely on a roll call of the regions finest produce including ingredients plucked from the estate's orchard, kitchen garden and bee hives. Expect house-churned butter and wine yeast-fermented bread; poached calamari on black risotto; heirloom tomatoes and house-made ricotta doused last minute in subtly smoked tomato consummé; crisp-skinned dory, confit lemon and peas in salsa verde; and juicy Flinders Island lamb on white bean and roast garlic puree. Outstanding estate drops, a commendable cellar, Riedel stemware and polite service elevate this refined drinking and dining experience.
TIP...Up for a sybaritic sleepover? Check into a vineyard suite and drink in those views.

THREE WINE GLASSES
Pull up to Port Phillip Estate and you're met with a building worthy of a Bond villain. A stark rammed-earth wall with an automated door lures you in and reveals the most stunning coastal view that Red Hill has to offer: vineyard in the foreground, Phillip Island in the distance. The menu is well executed with a focus on reputable producers. Aylesbury duck breast is matched with duck sausage and citrus gel, while Queensland spanner crab has a crustacean crumble to keep you in tune with the seaside vista. Borrowdale free-range pork is teamed with morcilla and a coffee-beer sauce. Wines from both Port Phillip Estate and Kooyong are championed here, but the list looks further afield with Old World additions. Desserts, like a deconstructed pavlova are satisfying but nothing eclipses the amazing view, attentive service, and dazzling interior design. It's a snapshot of everything great the Mornington Peninsula has to offer.
